In a recent article written by Matt Skibinski, he highlighted his concerns and hopes for artificial intelligence in the realm of journalism. The article was titled, “AI Will Democratize Journalism”. But what exactly does that mean? From creating a deepfake voicemail of President Joe Biden to crafting an article that claims to have found proof of election fraud in Wisconsin, Skibinski’s opening anecdote and concerns highlight how easily artificial intelligence can be used as a tool to create misinformation. In this way, the creation of fake news can be executed by anyone.

However, all is not lost. Matt Skibinski concluded his article by discussing possible ways AI companies can be regulated and how his company, NewsGuard, has optimized artificial intelligence and human analysts to combat this wave of misinformation. He closed the article on this hopeful note stating that: “When left to its own devices, AI is a great misinformation superspreader. But when seeded with high-quality and precise human-curated information…it can potentially be a force-multiplier for tracking and combating misinformation.”
