I feel it is only appropriate to write about the popular romance show, Bridgerton, during the buzz of its 3rd season which premiered on Netflix last month. Bridgerton is a period piece that takes place in 19th century England. The show follows the love stories of the Bridgerton family as told by the gossip columns written by the anonymous journalist, Lady Whistledown. Although the show is mainly fiction, there are parts of it that are built on facts. For example, Lady Whistledown also writes about Queen Charlotte and King George, who are real historical figures that ruled over England during that time. Not only are the stories of each season touching and heartfelt, but the show also captures the era so beautifully. Women were often shamed for being intellectuals, so her bravery is compelling. Thoughts like, “an appreciation of the arts is what lifts us beyond mere animals. It stirs the passions, and moves the spirits,” were hardly ever spoken out loud by a woman. This is one of the reasons why it is so important for her to remain anonymous. The risk of her identity being revealed throughout the show makes it even more binge-worthy. It truly makes you wonder what it was like to be a female journalist during that time period. For those who are interested, the show is based on a book-series which is most definitely worth the read. Check out the link down below to hear what the author, Julia Quinn, has to say about her book series being turned into smash-hit series.
