Community Issues

A community issue facing the DFW metroplex is the lack of Filipino restaurants. Personally, I have heard many say this, but this is not limited to DFW either.

"...Filipino restaurants make up just 1% of restaurants serving Asian cuisine, despite the fact that Filipinos make up 19% of the Asian population in the U.S."

Why is there a lack? Well the hard truth is that it is a lesser-known cuisine. Filipino food (food of the Philippines, if that is unknown) is difficult to come across if it isn't served as a homecooked meal. Interviewing others, they said that it is common for Filipinos and those related to seek Filipino food because they move away from relatives who DID know how to cook for career, education, or relationship reasons. These people never learned, and the lack of Filipino restaurants is the cause of a homesick heart. Some solutions others have mentioned to me include simply learning how to cook and/or support local Filipino businesses. This will make more Filipino businesses spring up and join the new American culture that loves Asian food. We love Vietnamese, Thai, Korean, Chinese, and other cuisines. What's stopping us from embracing the Philippines in the same way?
