With so many outlets for news, media, and information, how many of those sources are actually trustworthy? False news can be a game of telephone. If one source gets the information wrong, then the details get mixed up, and false news is created. Oftentimes, fake news is not always intentional and can come from uncredible sources. This is perpetuated even further when known "credible" sources share the information as well. A publication from USC Today by Pamela Madrid shows three main reasons why false news is believed to be true.
Sharing false news will always happen.
Individuals may be incentivized to share habits.
Online communities would need to be entirely restructured to prevent misinformation.
Madrid describes the spread of misinformation to be "part of a broader pattern of insensitivity to the information being shared." In today's age, stumbling across false news is not something that can be prevented. This is why it is important to learn strategies to help you, the reader, understand where your information is coming from.
