I learned recently that young people in Kenya started protesting last month due to a proposed tax bill, and are facing arrests, kidnappings, torture, and even killings by the local authorities. Emmanuel Igunza and Greg Dixon from NPR have evoked feelings of empathy with their verbally recorded story including interviews revealing the worry, unrest and danger faced by everyday citizens trying to have more of a say in their lives. Many are still missing. "Policing has to be carried out within the rule of law, and it has to give the rights of the arrested their full protection," one interviewee tells Emmanuel. They also make careful use of their words in this story to point out other angles, highlighting that the protestors also briefly stormed the Parliament and set fires.
It is an ongoing situation, and the great journalism in this story helps you understand so much better. You hear explosions in the background, the sadness in the voice of a mother pleading for anyone holding her son to please release him, and the determination in the voices of protesters' shouts. "Nearly 50 people have been killed and even more are missing," Greg Dixon states. I imagine that if it is this difficult to listen to one mother crying for her son, it's got to be an agonizing experience for anyone listening to all the family of those deceased after these protests or still missing.
