From Attempted Assassination to Golf: Recent Fake News

One recent piece of fake news circulating on social media recently was this image of Former President Donald Trump allegedly playing golf at his resort in Florida the day after an attempted assassination in Bethel Park, Pennsylvania. The caption seen widely across social media was, “Imagine getting shot at 7pm and still making your 9am tee time.” While the image was actually from a round of golf Trump played multiple years ago, people continued to speculate that following being shot in the ear, he was up and golfing the next day. Instead, President Trump made his way to Wisconsin for the Republican National Convention, not the golf course. The rhetorical strategy with this type of fake news was likely humor. There were multiple viral images of President Trump following July 13 that many said emphasized his strength as a leader. This post was likely to make commentary on the idea of strength in getting up and moving on following such a traumatic event.
