It’s summer here in Texas once again, you know what that means? Heat, and lots of it! On average, here in Texas the heat can get well above a sweltering 100 degrees! However, this year it appears that Mexico is the one getting the worst of it currently. Early last month, we saw Mexico suffer extreme amounts of heatstroke. So much so that Mexico made an official statement “The heat wave has killed at least 125 people and led to thousands of heatstroke cases in Mexico, where the heat was particularly intense.'' Scientists also described the heat wave as “potentially deadly” and “record breaking”.
Overall this statement panders to the sympathy of its readers, and tries to convince people that climate change is not only real, but that it is also happening right in front of their eyes. And, by extension, moves you to want to do something about it. It uses the fatality statistic to draw people to how real and serious the repercussions of climate change can be. It uses alarming words such as “record breaking” and “potentially deadly” to achieve this fearmongering. However, I do not believe this to be the wrong approach. Sometimes the best thing that one can do to convince others, is to show them the severity of what could happen if they don’t.
