Spotting false information can sometimes be challenging. What is true? What is false? A person has to follow a few steps to prove that what they are saying is factual. First, a person should be careful with the headlines. Many individuals who create the headlines will most likely use a title that will catch the reader's attention. Readers should avoid catchy headlines; if they decide to proceed and read it, verifying the information with an outside source is essential. An article called "How to spot false information" mentioned that "False news stories often have catchy headlines in all caps with exclamation points" (“Avoiding Misinformation | Citizens Clean Elections Commission”). Next, to avoid false information, when reading an article, ensure it is written by someone who can be trusted. The article also says, "If the story comes from an unfamiliar organization, check their "About" section to learn more"(“Avoiding Misinformation | Citizens Clean Elections Commission”). Checking the "About" section can help the reader verify how trustworthy the author is and look up their information elsewhere to see what they post. Another way they mentioned a person could avoid information is by looking up the storyline elsewhere. Instead of just running with the information the author posted, a person can look it up elsewhere; if nothing pops up, it is most likely false information. Following some ways to avoid false information is crucial so they don't engage in false information.
