These were the words of Ghana’s first photojournalist, James Barnor, responding to an interviewer’s question at one of his exhibitions, “Now James, you are eighty. How do you feel like?” That was fifteen years ago. Now, Mr. Barnor is ninety-five. James Barnor began his career as a photojournalist nearly seventy-five years ago and would become a pioneer in the region of West Africa, capturing moments in time ranging from politics, such as the independence of Ghana, to the everyday life of those living in Accra. Allotey Bruce Konuah stated that Mr. Barnor’s work was “aiding social history” as his photographs continued to shape and contribute to our understanding of the world.
