In her predictions for journalism 2023 article, Kathy Lu talks about the importance of having an inclusive workplace. She claims“Creating diverse, inclusive, welcoming workplaces is not about numbers; it’s about emotions. Namely: How we handle our own.” She believes the recent push to hire people of different ethnicity’s isn’t enough. “Because once you hire that person for their perspectives and experiences, do you know how their ideas and authenticity will be received, emotionally?” She feels our culture diminishes feelings, and that transfers over to the success of a workplace. People should be allowed to cry around their colleges or question a manager without fearing for their job. The stigmatism about showing emotion or talking about mental illness in the workplace isn’t healthy for anyone. Instead, it creates a “psychologically unsafe workplace” which is damaging for everyone involved. She believes the only way to create a truly inclusive environment is to “be able to confront your own reactions to emotions.” She wants the DEI to include training regarding emotional agility to help form a healthy work environment.
