In her piece for the 2024 Predictions for Journalism, Sami Aggarwal writes about her predicted changes in the way in which investigative reporting is shared with the public. She starts out by talking about the importance of investigative journaling. Investigative reporting works to “shed light in an injustice” seen in the world, and share those findings with the public. She believes the public wants to know the trusts about what is going on around them, and once they are aware of an issue, they will fight for justice. Investigative journalism reports are usually shared via long essays detailing the reporter’s findings. Aggarwal expresses that these types of works “will only reach certain kinds of audiences,” those that are willing to seek out the work, and spend hours reading about it. “The audiences for those prestige pieces inherently skew older, more affluent and let’s face it, traditional white and North American readers.” We all know that the majority of our younger population now get more of their news from social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram. Aggarwal believes that since investigative journalists want to reach as large of an audience as possible, they will consider sharing their information in a new way: videos or stories on platforms like TikTok or WhatsApp.
