Journalism has existed for well over a century, leaving behind some of the most famous people, writings, and photos in its wake. Joan Didion was a journalist in the 1960s, who continued to work up until she passed in 2021, is most remembered for "[helping] define the New Journalism movement in the 1960s". Her works, including memoirs, magazine articles, and books, contained rhetoric of all kinds of rhetoric such as grief-stricken works, and controversial topics. A 'Thoughtco' article says "Over time she would become known for her observations of distinctly American events, ranging from the Manson murders to the increasingly bitter national politics of the late 1980s to the scandals of Bill Clinton."
With writing about notorious subjects like the ones mentioned, she used her own take and perspective while also using metaphors to create a clearer picture for her audience. In some of her works, she also used her grief following tragedies to enhance the impact of the story she is conveying. After researching this journalist, I found her story quite inspiring. I think it is super inspiring as a woman to see a female journalist who was so successful, and followed her passion. Her works led her to receive a medal from former President Barack Obama in 2012 and I believe the world of journalism would not be the same today if it were not for her.
