Journalism historically hasn't been the safest job. Journalists are at risk of getting hurt out on the field of war or being hurt by protestors. But today, I'd like to focus on a risk that is on the rise for journalists. This is the jailing of innocent journalists around the world. Unfortunately, many nations don't allow freedom of the press or speech, so being a reporter can be dangerous. In 2016, Al Jazeera Journalist Mahmoud Hussein was detained by Egyptian authorities while he was visiting family and held until 2021. He was held without trial for 5 years just for being a journalist. Stories like these are on the rise. According to the CPJs 2021 Prison Census," The number of reporters jailed for their work hit a new global record of 293, up from a revised total of 280 in 2020". This shows a big issue as the world falls deeper into conflict, and as journalism becomes more important than ever, it's important to protect Journalists from the risk of being detained for reporting worldwide.
