Today's journalists have many opportunities as well as challenges, especially in the area of media transparency.Transparency can have different meanings to different individuals. It may be perceived by some as merely disclosing methods and sources, but by others as revealing organizational funding and prejudices. As stated by Sue Cross, the Institute for Nonprofit News' CEO, "Trust is the basis of reputation." Also, openness fosters a dialogue that fosters the development of trust. Answering questions about ownership, funding, and editorial practices is one of the most useful things news professionals can do to counteract false information. Cross describes this drive for transparency as a reaction to misinformation and AI-generated content. Since they enable viewers to comprehend the news production process, transparency initiatives like those run by NewsGuard and the Trust Project are essential. "Does it matter as much as making sure the perspective is overt and clear?" asks Cross, emphasizing that a publication or reporter's point of view is not as important as this. Keeping the public's trust requires this clarity. Moreover, Jeff Hancock of Stanford Social Media Lab highlights the journalist’s role in the AI age: “The media will be the biggest touch point between citizens and AI-generated campaigns in the 2024 elections, and journalists will play a huge role in protecting democracy.”
