My current obsession has recently been Love Island. I am sure you have heard about it recently with the growing popularity of the new season, but if not, let me catch you up to speed. This reality TV show captures various “contestants” competing to find love, with the promise of winning a sizeable grand prize of money at the end. I would be lying if I said that I was hooked on the drama and entertainment this show provides, but truthfully, the bare obsession that I had indulging in the show concerned me to an extent. That is until I realized my compulsion to watch the show was carefully instrumented by the producers of Love Island. But how do they do? With the varied use of public rhetoric, producers of Love Island alter the narratives present amongst contests to hook watchers of the series. Writer Joy Lee emphasizes this by stating, “The nature of the show, how it is filmed, edited, and discussed on social media, means that our opinions are obviously interfered with…” (2023). With the combination of heavy editing and social media integration, the reality of Love Island is altered to convey contested and users alike to twist perspectives and actual attitudes. In doing so, watchers are consistently drawn to the screen to see what will come.
