News Feeds: Compare different news apps or the way news is communicated in a social media platform. What rhetorical choices does each company (and app) make about how they deliver news?
In comparison to the different news apps and social media platforms that currently exist, each company utilizes various rhetorical choices to relay the news. For example, news platforms such as CNN or BBC emphasize professionalism and credibility by using credible and verified courses, professional/formal language, and in-depth reporting. With the goal of building trust between the news outlet and the audience, tone and reliability matters. Through tone, an authoritative and leadership-based tone commands the attention of an audience. Through updates, consistent and accurate updates commands the attention of an audience. In relation to social media, Twitter and Facebook platforms use shorter deliveries with formats that are easy to digest. Social media platforms also provide colorful, eye-catching visuals and use informal language to draw the attention of their audience. According to Pew's research, “Americans ages 18 to 29 stand out in that the most common digital way they get news is social media, with 42% saying they get news this way often versus 28% saying the same of either news websites or search engines.”
