On July 13, a shooter broke out at a Trump rally in Pennsylvania in an attempt to assist the former president. The breaking news of this incident was first captured on TV as the rally was televised. However, the leading news that broke the internet was that pictured above by journalist Evan Vicci. This image propels public rhetoric because citizens were astonished by Trump’s perseverance following such a traumatic event. The utilization of imagery regarding public rhetoric is that of familiar tactics for political motives. Journalist David Bauder of The Associated Press (AP) states, “Vicci’s image … also [has] political implications from many directions - as indelible images often do in the days and years after seismic events happen” (AP, 2024). Public rhetoric is the main point that propels an emotional response amongst citizens because the image “captures a range of complex details and emotions in one still image” (AP, 2024). Politicians use the ideology of public rhetoric to help propel their political goals. In this case, perhaps a way to encourage citizens to vote for Trump in the presidential election because he paints an image of power and resilience.
