Sue Cross is the executive director and CEO of the Institute for Nonprofit News. For 2024, Cross predicts. that "to build trust, news outlets prioritize transparency". Journalists play an extremely pivotal role in society, especially one that is governed in a democracy. As the gatekeepers and propagators of the truth, the fabric of democracy can be dependent on the integrity that journalists and media publications possess. Cross believes that transparency is a deciding factor in how the public trusts journalism, stating "transparency creates an exchange where trust can grow", especially in a field plagued by a rise in misinformation and disinformation. Cross acknowledges that "While transparency isn’t a fail-safe and rarely a perfect solution, it helps people identify credible information and journalists whose work they trust." I echo Cross' sentiments as I find it hard to trust most news sources especially because of a lack of transparency, often finding myself having to take steps to vet the source. To have trust in those who deliver your news is paramount.
