The Hamas attack on Israel on October 7th, 2023 brought the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine onto the front pages of every news outlet in America. Journalists rushed to cover the attack and keep us updated on news regarding this polarizing conflict, but exactly how are journalists conveying their message to the people of this country? Despite the gruesome war taking place in Gaza at the moment, fearless journalists are still writing stories and putting out information on what's happening to help build support for both the Palestinian and Israeli citizens affected in this conflict. One of these journalists is Mariam Abu Dagga, a photojournalist for the Independent Arabic. Mariam has been covering the war in Gaza since the attacks in October. She tells the stories of many Palestinians either being forced to relocate within Palestine or leave the land all together. Having lived it herself with the forced relocation of her son to the UAE, she delivers gut-wrenching stories through her journalism. Like Mariam, many journalists in Gaza use graphic images to instill a feeling of sadness, compassion, and anger in their viewers because “no matter how hard [they] try to explain the psychological exhaustion, [they] wouldn’t be able to describe it in words” (Abu Dagga). All in all, the courageous journalism brought about by this conflict is something I look forward to seeing unfold in the future (hopefully not for long) and is something most are incredibly grateful for because of the awareness and support that has come from it.
