Should Local News Be Publicly Funded?

One sentiment many experts shared about journalism's future is that a stronger focus on local news is imperative "to a better-informed republic." A handful of states have taken this task upon themselves by offering funding "to weakened news organizations struggling to cover local news," Jody Brannon believes that more states will follow suit. I would support more publicly funded news organizations. I could see more conservative states opposing the added expenditure of programs like this. Still, the benefit of "a credible, working press that explains democratic principles through explanatory journalism" far outweighs the relatively small endowment required for something like this to succeed.
