Social Media and Political Polarization

What is the role of social media in politics? For example the January 6th Capitol raid, it was sparked due to posts on platforms like Facebook, Twitter and Youtube, causing the spread of misinformation which fueled republican extremists to storm the capitol. Social Media plays a huge role in politics, as most Americans use social media and speak their minds how they want, causing the spread of misinformation “The capacity to disseminate misinformation, wild conspiracy theories, to paint the opposition in wildly negative light without any rebuttal—that has accelerated in ways that much more sharply polarize the electorate and make it very difficult to have a common conversation” (Obama)
