Local news is important in keeping communities informed about issues that impact them. Despite the challenges local news organizations face, including declining revenues and competition from digital media, they remain important for daily people's engagement. Local newspapers and stations give coverage of city council meetings, school board decisions, and community events that larger news stations might not report on or not find as important. "Local journalism is the heartbeat of democracy," says journalist Penny Abernathy. For more information on the state of local news, visit the Local News Initiative. https://www.usnewsdeserts.com
