Local Newsrooms in Danger

The public, especially in today's circumstances, turn to national news outlets for daily updates on the biggest issues like COVID-19. However, the impact that local news outlets should not be overlooked as many public broadcasters and digital startups play additive roles as mediums for information. In fact, the authors Elizabeth Hansen and Jesse Holcomb predict "complementary news sources head towards center stage". Unfortunately, the entire local news sector faces the major problem of lack of capital and funding in order to expand their organizations. Many startups depend on donors to kick start the business in order to build a newsroom and gain an audience. As in the business world, it is all about connections. So some local public broadcasters have the benefit of major donors aiding their companies; however, others are at a disadvantage when trying to find investors. In order to finance the expansion of local newsrooms, Hansen and Holcomb predict consolidation of public broadcasters and the help of philanthropic capital to boost production of local news sectors.
