Accountability For Misinformation

In Forbes Magazine’s article, “YouTube Amplifies Misinformation And Hatred, But Here’s What We Can Do About It”, Michael Posner discusses the ethics of largely influential media platforms such as YouTube who allow for the spread of wrong information and hate speech to be spread across their site. He uses the “Jan. 6 insurrection” videos that made their way to YouTube as an example of the company not fact-checking or properly controlling hateful publications and calls for accountability to be mediated through the federal government. Posner says that “I have long believed that governments generally should avoid interfering in the moderation of online content… But my views have changed because YouTube and the other major social media companies have been so slow to act.” This statement shows how people who are passionate about bringing an end to the era of “fake news” want to see action being taken at larger levels than simply bringing the misinformations to shame in the court of public opinion.
