An Interesting Spin

As I continued my weekly observation of front-page news sources in Oceania, I noticed a stark difference this week. It is Monday, March 21st, 2022. Today was different from the previous week, where a few front covers seemed to cover redundant topics. Instantly, I noticed the bolded, all capital headline adorning The West Australian located in Perth. Much like last week, the paper focused on another heartbreaking tragedy. This time it framed attacks on women that had been occurring and even suggested that an "ex-AFL player was among pair accused." I've noticed The West Australian tends to cover news of importance while catering to others that may read the paper.

For both The Fiji Times and Fiji Sun they each gravitated to the same topic. Both papers cover news focusing on Sitiveni Rabuka, Fiji's former Prime Minister. Each highlights what Rabuka is doing during this time of political campaigning. Unlike before, where I was only able to document one paper from Fiji, I was able to see combating papers this week. It allowed me to compare how each outlet presents the news to its citizens. While there is no difference of opinions or spin added to their headlines, both papers offer essential information in a way that doesn't present its biases.

Lastly, the two papers in New Zealand, The Dominion Post and The Press tell the stories directly affecting their citizens. Both front pages detail issues that are likely to leave impressions on their people, especially regarding voting. In The Dominion Press, almost the entirety of the front page consists of an article detailing infrastructure. Much like The Press, which takes a moment to shed some light on the issues affecting those in poverty. In comparison, both front pages have other details, such as ads and personal feel-good stories. However, they each still attempt to showcase the things that cause readers to buy their papers in the first place.

This week of observation could lead to an interesting shift between the papers of Oceania. While they were more concerned with having athletes on their covers last week, it seems like they will be hunkering down on the subjects that matter to their residents. As I continue to observe the papers, I will be watchful over the topics they continue to bolster.
