BEHIND THE PAPERS

Before discovering the article based on this assignment, my point of view on journalists was that journalists have such an easy job. I thought all they did was write and record most of the things happening throughout the day. I figured they wouldn't don't stress as much as anyone else with other jobs in the world because they don't do anything. Well, after reading this author's point of view and many others, I was completely wrong!

I chose Doris Troung's opinion and quote and reflected more on her writing. What interested me about her is her fight for equality for low-income students vs. the students that can provide and attend college. "Opportunities for young journalists aren't created equal, and us media internships are drought with inequality," as she stated, and I agree with this statement of hers. I agree with Doris because I feel like everyone who is trying to achieve something, whether they have the money or not, should gain the opportunity with what they are passionate about doing. From experience and Doris's statement, low-income students do not gain tremendous opportunities; they may not have the money or resources to gain access. One big issue that Dori noticed was that donors and the government invest and fund students who are already in college and have money. Not that this is a terrible idea, but some students inside school already do not take advantage of these opportunities as to where there are kids who need it the most would never get the chance to do something they have a passion for because of these issues. I believe, along with Doris, that people should create programs and funding for students in these types of situations.

Doris experienced another problem with journalists: young students and even some young adults would graduate and go to work for low-paying jobs with a high-cost degree. She believes that the field is overlooked and more financial institutions should gain. Some students would gain opportunities to transfer overseas and get a high-paying job while still in school and get ripped out of the money they are making, Doris calls it "scamming." The schools and sponsors would tell the students that they would gain many credit school hours to come and work, but little did the students know the college classes and courses would not be paid for. Students would have to go out of pocket, so all they are making is going back into school costs, leaving students with nothing to spare. I have learned a lot about journalists and the issues they are facing today and could have been going on for years. They deserve more than they have now and should be recognized for all they are experiencing.
