"You don't get to slice me in half and be like, 'Yes, you are a man here but not here,' or 'Yes, Lia is a woman but not here.' We don't exist in parts." - Schuyler Bailar
CNN News has had a reputation the last decade or so to present social and political issues from the perspective of the far-left (Liberal) ideology. Recently, majority of the country have been debating over the social issue surrounding Lia Thomas the transgender NCAA champion for women's swimming. CNN journalist Eric Levenson published his take on the issue March 22, 2022, with his article Lia Thomas: How an Ivy League swimmer became the face of the debate on trans women in sports - CNN. The article is filled with pathos, connecting to the emotional responses of the targeted audience (Liberals and LGBTQ community). Levenson stated " Fox News and right-wing news sites critical of society's changing views on sex and gender" is a direct statement clearly stating his stance on the matter while 'bashing' opposing audiences and news source. Is this professional? Maybe not, however it's a rhetorical strategy Levenson used to gain the "trust" from his targeted audience. The article uses quotes from another transgender Schuyler Bailar, and gives a back story on Lia Thomas, her struggles with her identity and becoming a transgender woman athlete. The article does a great job of connecting emotionally to the audience.
