Contrasting Headlines

Two headlines about an event in the Russian war on Ukraine show contrasting styles of new media providers. CNN’s headline reads “Russian Troops Have Withdrawn from Chernobyl, says Ukrainian Operator”. The CNN headline is factual and straight forward; it quotes an individual who is present at the event site and includes little interpretation. The headline also suggests deescalation of fighting with the word “withdrawn”. Discussing the same event, a headline from AP News reads “Russians Leave Chernobyl Sight As Fighting Rages Elsewhere”. The headline from AP News injects sensationalism with the word “rages” and also characterizes the fight as continuing.
