The newspaper covers in the Freedom Forum’s Today’s Front Pages all have different methods of displaying images and text on the front page of their newspapers. The Birmingham News, the Times Daily, and the Opelika-Auburn News all employ images as integrated parts of the text columns. The Birmingham News places an image at the top left hand corner of the newspaper to introduce their story on “one of the best burgers of Alabama.” This strategy of placing an image before text creates curiosity among readers about what the image relates to and encourages them to read on. The Times Daily, on the other hand, placed an image at the forefront and inserts other images to go along with the number of stories they featured on their front page. This strategy may create appeal for readers who are more visual than textual. Lastly, the Opelika-Auburn places a large colorful image at the center of their front page which creates a lively initial impression and sparks interest into the content of the front page news story. All of these stories are effective in appealing to different types of audiences.
