Don’t Trust Everything You See

Ståle Grut’s prediction for journalism in 2022 to NiemanLab was that media manipulation is beginning to get out of hand. He remarked that with the technology of artificial intelligence, 3D softwares, and even basic YouTube tutorials, it is growing increasingly easy to create fake images and try to pass them off as real. He used a recent example, “The Book of Veles,” which received acclaim and was screened at a prestigious festival, and was then found to have used photos manipuled by 3D software and text generated by an AI. He argued that we will need to prepare for the “new normal, where scrutinizing online images and videos is as natural as being fascinated by them.”
