Two days after the Russian invasion of Ukraine Facebook changed its policy to allow users to call for the death of Vladimir Putin and Belarusian president Alexander Lukashenko. Normally, a post calling for death of an individual violates Meta company policies regarding violence. However, the enforcement by quality control over posts including calls for the deaths of heads of states was suspended. However the policy change was temporary, as ten days after its enactment, “Russian authorities labeled Meta’s activities as ‘extremist’”,
and the company reverted to its original company guidelines. This episode with content guidelines shows how difficult it is to moderate war, when the subject matter is inherently violent.
