FAKE NEWS! But what is it?

What's fake news? Well, after reading A Citizen's Guide To Fake News: fake news is intentionally fake because it is employed in order to try and manipulate the reader. They do this by using clickbait (attention grabbing headlines that spike curiosity) and then present the fake story as real news. Fake news is incredibly dangerous, and has "caused growing mistrust among American people'' (Burston 5).

How do we know what to trust? The biggest piece of advice that Burston and his colleagues gave is "be proactive in verification before you share a news story" (11). One step you can use is while you "think you’re on www.nytimes.com, you could easily be on www.nytimes.com.co instead" (11). Always check the website URL first. Do your own research before sharing, and always double check.
