In part one, we discussed the techniques used by publishers that fool people into believing fake news. Fake news is everywhere, so how do we avoid being fooled? Well, here are a few ways to check for false information. The number one thing is to check the sources. It is important to use reputable news sources and cross-check information with other sources. If the information is the same across the board, then it is more than likely it is factual. It is also important to check who is quoted. Fake news will attempt to avoid quoting a specific person or organization. However, when they do quote an organization, they will include "organizations that look official, but don't exist." Also, do not forget to check the dates. There are times that "fake news stories [will] attempt to distort the truth by tweaking the timeline of actual events." Become knowledgeable about the event being talked about. If the timeline does not line up, it could be false information. These are just a couple of ways to spot fake news. Fake news is never going to just go away. Therefore, we must do our best to educate ourselves on ways to filter through lies.
