Feminicidio

On International Women's day in Mexico, thousands of women marched for those killed for their gender in 2021. While the reported number of femicides in the previous year is 969, activists are claiming the number is much higher, and “that 10 women a day are killed because of their gender.” I spoke to an acquaintance of mine who lives in Mexico. She’s twenty-six, a teacher and mom, and lives in Nuevo Laredo. When I asked her about the protest, she said she was in favor of the movement to end violence and injustice against women. She explained to me that the protests were not happening because of a specific act of violence, but acts of violence that occur every day in at least one state in Mexico. This movement began recently on International Women’s day, and it used to be a celebration but with the awareness of feminicidio by the movement, it was decided to instead commemorate the day with a women's march. I found it interesting that in reference to the violence stated in the article below, the violence claimed by the President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, my friend said there was very little violence she was aware of in terms of the protest.
