Google Policy for Russian Translators

Google policy has not allowed Russian translators to use the word “war” in regards to the war in Ukraine since the beginning of the conflict in early May. Russia has severe consequences for false dissemination of news regarding the Russian military. The Google policy was enacted in order to protect their employees. As a spokesperson for Google said “we remain focused on the safety of our local employees. As has been widely reported, current laws restrict communications within Russia”. While the justification of protection of individuals inside Russia is warranted, this also demonstrates the largest information company in the word participating in a state-run propaganda.
