The Ted talk starts with the speaker giving the audience a small assignment; for this assignment, we are to write a basic sentence. This sentence will be used later in the Ted talk. The speaker begins explaining the origins of the English language. The speaker states the Germanic language Anglo Saxon became the first common language thought Britain; the Anglo-Saxon language is sometimes referred to as old English. Eventually, war broke out in the British lands causing the land to be split bewin the Norse and the Saxons. As time had passed, people from Norse and those from Saxon began to mingle; thereby morphing the common language into one. More conflict eventually caused french to be spoken by the British royalty and aristocrats. While French was spoken by the elites, common English was spoken by the common people. It is at this point in the Ted talk that the sentences which were written earlier play a role; the audience is told that the sentence they decided to write most likely contains some old French, old English, and Norse.
