How to Slow the Spread of Misinformation

Misinformation and fake news are widely known topics in today's society, partially because of how fast these bouts of information spread. The best way to counteract misinformation is to slow it down yourself and do your research before you decide to make a post. This is especially relevant today when topics like the Russia-Ukraine war and Covid are so widely discussed. Debunking misinformation is another surefire way to slow the rate at which fake news finds its way onto phone screens everywhere. Apa.org says this is “best achieved by warning people that a specific piece of information is false and explaining why a source might lie or be misinformed about it before they encounter the information organically”. If everyone who was active on social media took some of these steps before sharing their next post, fake news might become something of the past.
