I am sure you have heard the saying "they aren't telling you the truth" or maybe you have seen news headlines that upon further inspection just don't add up. Is there some truth behind this, that our news outlets are no longer honest?
In Predictions for Journalism 2021, Zizi Papacharissi explains truth in the world of journalism. She says "Science is equipped to find, understand, and defend the truth...Journalists, by contrast, are trained to find the truth. Scientists need the help of journalists to tell truths to the general public." In the past couple of years before Covid-19, journalists were often defending their truths that they were accused of finding. However, going by Zizi's definition, journalists are not to blame. They are simply interpreters between the science and the public. Once journalists are viewed as interpreters, there can then be better understanding and discussion regarding truth, rather than pointing fingers at simple interpreters.
Until next time,
good afternoon, good evening, and good night.
