International Protection of Journalism

Over a thousand journalists were murdered in the past ten years. Journalist rights are governed internationally by Article 19 of Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted in 1948. The article is the international equivalent of the first amendment in the United Nations and grants “the right to seek receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers”. While the UN grants rights, it does not have true enforcement in nations that do not observe the UN articles. Some 130 countries are evidenced as having restrictions to journalist freedoms and abuses that have lead to detainment and death.

Reporters without Borders (RSF), a French international NGO consults with the UN, UNESCO, and Council of Europe to promote an initiative for representation in the United Nations for Journalist safety. The RSF also cites that the United States is behind other Western Nations in their safe treatment of journalist, but in front of other countries not in the west.
