Have you ever been on YouTube and clicked on a video based on the title, and that video ended up being boring, off-topic, or misleading? This situation is known as “clickbait,” designed to lure readers or viewer in with an exciting or scary title to get the payout from the number of clicks or views the upload received. “Clickbait,” is also another way of saying “fake news.” According to the University of Michigan, “fake news” is defined “as those stories that are false: the story itself is fabricated, with no verifiable facts, sources or quotes.” “Fake news” is only a tiny crumb of an entire cookie. When looked at as a whole, the term “fake news” gives a broad description of the falsification of news articles; however, Misinformation and Disinformation can divide false information uploads into seven different types of “mis- and disinformation” to better understand what kind of information is being produced as well as why that information is being presented to the public.
