In the World of Journalism: Is There a Crisis with "a Crisis"?

What is a crisis? Up until the year 2020, a tragic event or series of events were called a crisis and required a response from all within the affected community to respond. This still holds true, but what happens if you have a crisis within a crisis? What do you call that? How should you respond?

In Predictions for Journalism 2021, Candis Callison addresses this word puzzle. Callison says "What, where, and when a crisis began becomes much harder to pinpoint if underlying conditions already form layers of crises."

Back in the heat of Covid-19, the forest fires were raging across the West Coast. That in and of itself is another crisis, an ecological crisis. Does it relate to or is an effect of the biological crisis of Covid-19? Callison brings up this example in her article to show that a crisis is more than just an adjective for a tragedy. With the word should come an explanation, some context, and why this tragedy is important and requires our attention.

Until next time,

good afternoon, good evening, and good night.
