Journalism in Our New Normal

Since March of 2020, the United States of America has been terrorized by a virus that stole away our vision of "normal". In our new life we must hide our smiles behind a mask, keep our distance when we're out in public, trust our doctors and our government to take care of us, all while trying to carry on with our lives despite the looming anxiety of it all. We sacrifice all of these things so that we and the people around us stay safe, but for some journalists, these sacrifices are affecting their careers.

As I was reading through Predictions for Journalism 2022 » Collections » Nieman Journalism Lab » Pushing to the Future of Journalism (niemanlab.org), I noticed that a lot of these journalism and media professionals were commenting on the current status of the pandemic. For example, Alice Antheaume was referring to the importance of face-to-face interviews when she stated, "it might let you glimpse that almost imperceptible frown on your source's face when you ask a question". When half of a person's face is covered by safety equipment, it can be difficult to read their emotions and build a connection with them during a meeting. Journalism requires a lot of communication and cooperation from the people around you, making it a very hard career to hold during a time like this. [1 image, 1 link, 1 quotation, 225 words]
