News Through Social Media Platforms

Social media platforms have rapidly become the modern way of receiving news. These platforms include apps such as Snapchat and Twitter. These platforms and apps have already built a following for their entertainment aspect but now they are including everyday news within the platform. According to Pew Research Center, “The percentage of Americans who get news regularly from these sites has remained largely unchanged since 2020.”

Snapchat uses an interesting tactic of posting eye-catching titles on their stories. For example, Snapchat has stories that you can subscribe to to receive every post. When opening the app there’s a discover page with different stories and shows that involve current news with detailed descriptions. These stories involving news are primarily coming from well known magazines. People, the magazine, has their own story/show on Snapchat that allows them to post their news in slideshows.

Twitter also has a discovery page similar to Snapchat, it is filled with different pages to read through. These pages include trending news on sports, Covid 19, and entertainment. Clicking on the sports page takes the user to different posts that are currently trending about the latest basketball or football games. The difference between this app is that news is clearly communicated through the users themselves. These posts are coming from users across the world as well as sports teams themselves. Twitter always allows its users to post recent news to share with others.
