Nearly every masthead I have come across when perusing Today's Front Pages is black. Sure, the fonts may be different among each newspaper, but most don't do a brilliant job of catching the eye. If these papers make one thing clear, it's that the most crucial element to seize the attention of an audience is the lead photo. While many of the lead photos I examined were enthralling, it was clear to see that there was another attention-grabbing tactic at play with these papers. For example, in the ten papers the site showed from around Connecticut today, seven out of ten contained the same headline and image of a cannabis farm, titled "Passing on Cannabis."
While having an epic lead image or headline may be successful in its intrigue and persuasion, another key element to get people talking is relevance. Something like cannabis isn't very relevant to someone living in Texas, as it is currently illegal. With the introduction of recreational cannabis arriving in Connecticut later this year however, residents there may want to know more about it.
On the contrary, the Rams' Super Bowl Victory is littered in lead images and headlines in states all throughout the country. Topics like this are likely to be talked about everywhere, but for matters of lesser magnitude or scale, breaking news for some may not be so breaking for others.
