Out With The Old And In With The New: Upcoming Changes In Journalism

NiemanLab’s predictions for the future of journalism in the year 2022 focus primarily on the growing transition to a more digital form of reporting and the connections that need to be made with the communities being reported on. Most of the journalists who shared their opinions with NiemanLab had similar responses to the survey, calling on integrity and writer-audience relationships as the drivers for innovation in this industry. From quotes like that of Sarah Marshall, who says to other journalists: “We’ll mitigate the risks of our often uneasy relationships with Facebook, Google, and Apple by further doubling down on diversifying our audience sources and cultivating direct relationships with readers,” it is easy to see how one can reconcile the idea of a growing technological world with the idea of reaching as many people as possible through writing. While these fast-paced developments can foster a general anxiety among journalists, many of them seem well-equipped to adapt to the changes that come with growing technology and the growing number of communities that require a platform for their stories to be heard.
