The public's trust on traditional media has been slowly dwindling over the decades. It is hard for readers to not be skeptical of information. Traditional media has had a history of reporting events wrongly, misleading the public, and having biases. It is possible that this may get worse.
The Build Back Better Bill passed the House in November. According to New York Times' Marc Tracy, "if the $2.2 trillion social safety net and climate package makes it through the Senate, it will provide $1.67 billion over the next five years for newspapers, websites, radio and TV stations, and other outlets that primarily cover local news."
David Skok thinks this bill "risks further eroding trust in traditional media and needs to be considered before any legislation is passed." Both the left and the right would use this as an opportunity to claim that certain news organizations are in the pocket of the Biden Administration and dismiss whatever information they publish.
Funding from the government to traditional media is going to further deteriorate the trust that the public has for them and would cause major conflict between news sources trying to get the upper-hand on each other. Ultimately, the government needs to consider how this would affect the relationship between the public and the media before passing this bill.
