Poverty in the Metroplex

Dallas County's population has been growing exponentially, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic that took the world by surprise two years ago. With this population growth comes a growth in poverty issues. According to an infographic posted by Dallas College, "Dallas residents are more likely to be impoverished than those in any of America's biggest cities except in Detroit, Memphis, and Philadelphia." My friend and I, Michael, discussed the facts on the infographic. 1 in 4 people that live in Dallas live in poverty. Michael says he's "not surprised" because "everything's so expensive now." The inflation rate in the United States continues to contribute to the number of those in poverty each day. Pay continues to stay the same while prices of goods increase everywhere. People with two children who earn $8.80 and below are at the poverty line, while those who make roughly $23.07 and above per hour earn a living wage. There is a significant gap between a living wage and being at the poverty line.
