Prediction: How Newsrooms Will Rebuild Trust in Journalism

In NeimanLab's Predictions for Journalism 2022, Julia Angwin predicts, "Newsrooms will invest in cutting-edge methods for uncovering the truth. They’ll begin to build innovative digital research labs equipped to use automation, computation, quantitative analyses, and forensic techniques." This prediction comes to alleviate a problem facing journalists today: the public's wavering trust in journalism as a whole. According to Angwin, "The rise of disinformation and attacks on the media in recent years have eroded trust in journalism. To rebuild that trust, the stories we publish need to stand up to greater scrutiny. Receipts are required." Should Angwin's predictions come true, we can expect to see journalists utilizing these tools to reinforce their articles with more thorough research and analysis. Hopefully, with these changes in place, the public will be able to restore their trust in journalism.
