Self-Care in the Presence of Chaos

In a prediction by An Xiao Mina, she details the challenges that journalists face in the midst of the pandemic, and how she hopes that 2022 will bring more enthusiasm and motivation for communities to practice self-care.

The amount of stress that has been placed upon communities the past couple of years has caused people to suffer, "become more error-prone, find rational thinking harder, [and has made] decisions too complicated to process." This is because massive amounts of stress cause the prefrontal cortex to become less active. Unfortunately for journalists, this pandemic has also introduced "mass death, violence and environmental destruction in the headlines, trauma, pain and anxiety," which journalists must constantly report on. This takes a toll on their minds, as they are constantly surrounded by negativity. Additionally, "more often than not, Covid-19 is exacerbating existing traumas while also creating new ones." People who were suffering from depression, trauma, and anxiety prior to the pandemic are now finding themselves to be experiencing worse mindsets. These reasons are why Mina is hoping that in 2022, we can focus on funding community care, so that the stress from the pandemic can be lessened and we can focus on healing our mass trauma.
