The Bleak Future of Local News

Local news provides us with an essential service: it gives us the information we need to make informed decisions within our local communities. This is something often overlooked by larger media outlets due to the complexity of providing localized news for every region they cover. However, in recent years, local news providers have been closing up shop at an alarming rate. Many communities are at risk of losing their only source of local news, while many more communities have already lost their local news. According to PEN America, "When ad revenue dries up, consolidation and cost cutting gut newsrooms, beats remain uncovered, and corruption goes uninvestigated, the American populace lacks vital information about their lives and their communities." At this rate, communities need to make a massive push to support local news providers to prevent the complete collapse of our localized news.
